Calgary Picnic Rules and Reservations for 2026

Most casual picnics are straightforward, but the rules change when you need an exclusive site, bring alcohol, add a large structure or turn the gathering into a public event.

This guide summarizes the official starting points for Calgary picnic rules and reservations in 2026. City pages and onsite signs remain authoritative because closures, fire restrictions and site availability can change.

Calgary park hours

City parks are generally open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. unless otherwise posted. Some locations have different hours, and pathways may remain open separately. Check the City's park-user reference and signs at the chosen location.

When a reservation helps

You do not need to reserve every patch of grass used for a small picnic. Reserve a designated site when you need priority access to specific tables, a fire pit, a shelter, power or space for a larger group.

The City currently lists reservable picnic areas in:

For the 2026 season, large picnic sites are available from May 15 through October 12. They are assigned in six-hour blocks, and the City states that bookings require at least five days' notice. Check current booking dates, rates and policies before making plans.

Alcohol is allowed only in designated places

Alcohol is not permitted everywhere in a park. Calgary designates four kinds of locations: certain neighbourhood picnic tables, large picnic sites, signed open areas and winter fire pits.

At designated locations, consumption is permitted from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The exact boundary matters; being inside the same park does not make every nearby space eligible. Use the City's Alcohol in Parks map and current rules, then confirm the signage onsite.

The Wandering Picnic does not include alcohol. If guests bring their own, they are responsible for the location rules, age requirements, safe transportation and cleanup.

BBQs and fire

The City allows personal backyard-style propane BBQs in manicured parks and greenspaces, with instructions to place them on cement or dirt where possible. Larger commercial equipment and solid-fuel cooking can require additional approval.

Portable propane fire pits are subject to location and time rules. Wood-burning personal fire pits are not allowed. Always check active fire restrictions and the rules for the selected park before bringing cooking or heating equipment.

When a picnic becomes a special event

A casual gathering can require a different permit when it has a greater effect on the park or neighbouring community. Examples can include large tents, inflatables, merchandise sales, public food service, amplified entertainment, vehicle access or extensive signage.

A final check before leaving

• Confirm the park is open and accessible.
• Check whether the chosen table or site is reserved.
• Bring a permit when you have one.

• Keep dogs leashed except in designated off-leash areas.
